![]() The game is broken on modern PCs in a couple of ways. Steam: No Good Old Games: Maybe, with some serious work. Retroarch's Beetle PSX HW emulation core has the options that allow the game to look MUCH better than the PC version, in my opinion. Regardless, I recommend that anyone who wants to play Wipeout 2097/XL should emulate the PS1 version. It's just a shame that no current emulator for any system can emulate the ATI Rage cards required to run the game. Ironically, the MacOS version apparently has support for up to 120Hz framerates, online play (something that wouldn't appear again in a Wipeout game until Pure, I think), and support for using your own music via MP3 files. It had a nasty tendency to speed up during a straight section right before a sharp turn, leading inevitably to you slamming into the wall. The worst part is that on Odessa Keys the game speed wouldn't stay consistent. Sure, that's manageable in the lower speed classes, but on rapier or phantom? I took video recordings of a few tests in time trial to calculate how fast the game was running relative to real time, and I think in one test the game was running at 2x the intended speed. Granted, I didn't change the GPU in my tests, so a faster GPU might ALSO cause undesired speedups. You're right about the frame limiter, but my testing has shown the frame rate to be dependent on the CPU speed, rather than the GPU. I own a boxed copy of Wipeout XL for PC, and I've done a bit of testing with it using PCem. In the end I guess it really all depends on whether they could get the rights. It would just be a great addition to the steam library Wipeout 2097 has NEVER seen any sort of rerelease since it was ported to mac in 2002, and I personally find that quite silly, given it's hailed by critics as the best game in the series modern retro gamers would finally be able to play it without having to hunt down the original hardware and used copies on eBay, or resorting to emulation I imagine Cold Storage would be fine with them using his music, although I'm pretty sure it IS copyrighted since he released the Slipstream albums They wouldn't have to worry about getting the rights for all the licensed music in the ps1 version, except for Herd Killing (the intro music). It would (I think anyway, don't know much about how this stuff works) be easy to port, they already have a game built for PC to work with In addition to the main championship mode, there are also challenge modes, winning in which rewards the player with faster game settings, new tracks, and new vehicles.I imagine there would be a sizable backlash from people thinking they'd be getting the ps1 version, but I think this would be good thing if it happened because: ![]() The game's four difficulty levels are used to crank the speed up and down, with the highest setting corresponding to the highest speed. ![]() As in the first game, the vehicles move at very high speeds. The gameplay system is similar to that of the previous game: players race against each other or computer in high-speed futuristic environments, liberally picking up weapons scattered around the stages and using them against the opponents to finish the race in the highest position.Įach vehicle is provided with a shield once this shield is breached (by weapons or other kinds of damage), the craft explodes. Instead of the F3600 anti-gravity racing competition, the game features an even faster and more dangerous tournament: the F5000 AG league. ![]() WipEout XL is set in the year 2097, around four decades after its predecessor. ![]()
